Tidbits:

~1979:  One of the first Rosh Hashanah Services ever held in Durango was led by Henry Kwitter in his antiques shop behind the North Main laundry.  Henry and his wife moved here from the East Coast, and were only here for a short time, but they were very involved with the community.  He was exceptional on the Shofar!

~1984:  Our Yom Kippur service was held in a small room in the basement of what is now Vectra Bank.  It was in a windowless room, and was very sparsely attended.  The Rabbi who led our service departed very early the next morning from the Cortez airport.

~1978:  A Passover Seder was held on the top floor of a very old building where the Red Snapper now stands.  We cooked the entire meal for almost 100 people, and there was barely room to move.

~1982:  The first known briss was held at the home of Ira Plotkin, then the mayor of Durango.  There was a mohel from Denver, and lots of lox.

~1980:  We held our High Holiday services in the chapel at Fort Lewis, as we did for several years.  Later, we had our services in the Student Union building near the post office, which was a much larger space.

~1983:  Our Shabbat services were held in the Unitarian center on East 3rd Avenue.  Regular attendees were Herb and Enid Brodsky (who traveled from the wilderness near Pagosa), Jeff Deitch, Anna Carter (a Holocaust survivor), Jerry and Lorraine Gardenswartz (who had moved here from Denver), Gary and Bobbi Sue Steres (who owned Griego Lock and Key), Richard and Gayle Brown and Bruce and Frayda Ornstein (who owned a travel agency in the General Palmer House.
